Phasing

The ditch was tentatively phased to the Anglian period because of its relationship with ditch 012AD00311. It also cut through pit 012AD00717, which contained a single Roman sherd.

Discussion

This short ditch segment is on exactly the same alignment as 012AD00311 immediately to the north, and although no direct stratigraphic relationship was determined in the field, they are almost certainly 2 phases of the same enclosure system.

The fill was a sandy loam, Munsell colour 10YR 4/2, with less than 5% chalk inclusions. Both daub and charcoal flecking were present, though not in recoverable quantities. Unlike 012AD00311 to the north, this segment contained only a single animal bone, a sheep radius.

The ditch was cut into hillwash, generally with a U-shaped profile.
